So who is The Professional Student?
I’m Genki Unno, currently the Chief of IT Operations and Advisor to Yearbook at Yokohama International School. Similar to TV charaters with a title that contains ‘Chief’, like Chief Engineer Scotty and Chief Tyrol, I tend to fix things that break and have wires sticking out of them. As Advisor, I try to motivate and work with a pile of students who volunteer to work on the yearbook. Though I enjoy fiddling with things, I prefer the latter job.
I’m also an avid amateur photographer, novice graphic designer, hack chef, delinquent musician, eager reader, dedicated writer and eager learner.
As artist, my works are viewable here at Behance.net and my own portfolio site. I also have a flickr I don’t use much and a fotologue.jp I prefer when I publish. I can write an essay on my photography, so I’ll probably do that at another time.
Saturday afternoons as a child watching Julia Child, Jacques Pepin, Graham Kerr and the Frugal Gourmet gave me an interest in food that has never left me. Eating and cooking is something I enjoy a lot. I just wish I had a kitchen. A real one. Bigger than a telephone booth.
Music? Clarinet for fifteen+ years, saxophone for seven+, flute for a few. Though I suck at exploring music, I still enjoy it enough to consider buying another saxophone from time to time. Listening is just as fun, but I don’t listen seriously enough. Am always in need to find more good music.
Reading and writing have always come naturally to me. In fact, I never practiced for a spelling test and never missed a word. Though I was on a five year book drought that ended recently, books and writing have been things I enjoy. All despite hating English class. Yes, I hated English class.
The Professional Student is named after my desire to always learn. I’ve accepted that I will never learn everything. Perfection is impossible. But it is in the pursuit I feel that there is value. Learn from friends, learn from peers, learn from books, learn from life.
