Hi Genki,
I was reading your latest post and thought I'd check out what you had to say about twitter. I was surprised to find my name listed in your people to follow - thanks. Some good advice you have here. I'm learning from you and your tweets. Will be good to stay in touch with you and Brian. Pity we lost your taxi that night in Shanghai- would have enjoyed sharing a meal with you.

I really like this post. I try to follow your rules--usually. Sometimes though, because I'm trying to say too much, I've resorted to the "ur" or "thx." I think because of this post I'll really try to focus on "cherishing the limitation," and I'll challenbe myself to "require an element of eloquence."

Well put. Thanks for this one.

Thanks for the shout out. It is an honor to be on the list with all of those great educators. For any non-Twitter readers out there, my advice is this: Just try it. You don't "get it" until you start using it, and then nothing will be the same again.

When I was in high school back in 1991, we played this game with dart guns and the entire senior class. It was rad!

Of course I wouldn't want to be running around NYC with any sort of gun, squirt or otherwise. This has the potential for one of those old "Laser Tag" endings where a cop ends up shooting some kid who was just playing a game, all in the name of the war on terror...

No, I agree that there is an extent that bullshit is important. But the depth and breadth of its existence is way out of touch, I think. Sure, it makes sense as training for the grueling reality of adulthood. There are a lot of jobs that simply require blind loyalty and a lot of shutting up. But even then I don't think it can be entirely justified. Partially, out of thought that it burns way too much time and makes work into a chore. Really, the workforce and humanity would be a little better off if more could enjoy themselves during work, as well as off hours.

what do you regard as "real brain work"?
i'm personally loathe to regard as much of school "bs" as you do. though i just recommended to my hs senior-aged cousin to skip as much class as possible, the rote assignments are good preparation for what comes after high school (and college) - work. most jobs require you to do much of the same thing over and over and the same or other jobs require you to "fluff up" your work as much as possible. whether you're in a lab, doing the same test over and over to figure out the results, or whether you're trying to 'sell' your idea as better than the next guy's - most jobs relegate the moments of genius to just a fraction of your time. the rest of the time is more of the same.
i'm sure you can take issue with jobs as such - work smarter, not harder, maybe? - but i think the repetitive, fluffy nature of work is essential to getting things done.

it doesnt look any better, and its not any more practical than before..

Hi Dan,

Thanks for dropping by! For me, I think there's an element of being part of the choir. BUNKO represents a lot I learned from my parents and my grandparents. But it makes the same concepts into juicy tidbits that are easier to digest than what fleeting banter I may propagate. Being part of the education sphere, that also makes BUNKO worth it.

Yet, the fact I spend a lot of time with high school students that consider 1500 yen a lot of miles might have something to do with it too :D

Cheers,

Genki --
Thanks for picking up a copy of JOHNNY BUNKO. But don't think about the entertainment-time-to-cost ratio. For a book like this, try the enduring-value-of-the-advice-to-cost ratio. IMHO, that makes BUNKO a bargain. Thanks for reading.
Best,
Dan Pink

Great article. Another great presentation to go along with this article is the eight principles of fun: http://www.eightprinciples.com/. The five big questions are also good: http://www.fivebigquestions.com/. There is also a slide presentation by Zen Presentation's Garr Reynolds on Johnny Bunko here: http://simplisticthoughts.com/2008/04/29/2-for-1-career-advice-and-presentation-skills/

You have an oven, you lucky guy. Isn't there a soy version of butter you could make your cookies with? How about margarine for the time being until butter's a bit cheaper?

I wonder if butter becomes the top smuggled item from the US bases?

This research study http://tinyurl.com/66dwqt states our Brain are telling us to be nice. Basically we get a better high from helping people than making more money. I know it true for myself. I bet it's one of the reason I'm a teacher. If it was the other way around maybe I'd be on Wall Street doing the best I could, earning the big bucks.

That's a good piece of writing. A teaching degree is a formality, We're all teachers of life and we become educators with the passion and desire to make a difference.

Real community service and volunteering is very difficult. And I have seen too many times people partake in Habitat for Humanity or other programs and think they are helping the world. I agree with you that, in fact, they are only pleasing themselves. I only got this wake up call when I went through a similar volunteer program at university. What helped me realize that volunteering is hard work and you need dedication to really make a difference is because I had great mentors. The supervisors/professors & other folk from the campus ministry and great upper class men inspired me to really experience dedication and team work. More than that, I learned that volunteering is difficult because you have to accept that you do it for yourself. I actually felt so free when I realized that. It was so hard accepting that I did nothing and understood nothing of the people I met in Mexico. But I was very fortunate that I realized that I didn't do enough for the people I met but they did the world for me. Being grateful was a very powerful lesson I learned. A very difficult lesson.

Great article on giving more freedom to students. Restricting sites that students can visit isn't going to stop them from seeing them. I believe it is much better to put all the information in the hands of the students and let them decide.

How can we hope for respectful adults if we don't ever give them a chance.
